Charles Nungesser and Francois Coli

    Newer Older

In 1927 Nungesser teamed up with the one eyed Coli, a veteran of the Great War and a pioneer in long distance flying, to attempt to cross the Atlantic. Nungesser was a legendary Great War pilot who scored 43 air victories while chasing women and boozing. In their aircraft the "White Bird" they left France heading for New York. They never made it. Two weeks after they disappeared Lindbergh successfully crossed the Atlantic.

Maybe they just ditched it off the Canary Islands and took up sunbathing and relaxing.

There was an in depth research into their disappearance in the 1990s and thee current thought is they crashed in southern Canada or northern Maine.

Great photo! Do you think it was possible that the wrong man was keeping an eye out for a good spot to land?

    6. Wooway1 14 months ago | reply

: ) They knew Lindbergh was going to attempt the flight and left when the weather was still potentially dangerous.

The heart and skull and crossbones looks very much like my fraternity badge. Odd. Any idea of the origin of the insignia on their plane?

    8. Wooway1 14 months ago | reply

It was Nungesser's personal insignia that he had on his Great War aircraft.
