The first rule of drinking Vodka Russian style is...
This is what you drink with your blini. Vodka. Straight. In the shot form. According to Nick's Russian rules:
1. Vodka is to be drunk always as a shot, never sipped.
2. Vodka is to be drunk always in company, consisting of at least
three persons (called a troika, I believe).
3. Vodka is to be drunk with a proper toast preceding the shot, by which we mean that the toast should be a
narrative, the more elaborate the better; it is unacceptable to simple
state: "cheers" or any such vapid niceties.
4. The drinking of vodka must be follow with a bite of food, preferably a piece of blini or a
pickle.
5. Finally, when one person proposes a toast, nobody is allowed to
refuse to drink.
Rule number 5 was, shall we say, relaxed after the first year of this wonderful tradition, because it resulted in several casualties and porcelain hugging, and Nick, like a benevolent dictator, now tolerates the occasional wussing out. It still is not preferred, though.

Well, lol, what Nick forgot that there is never a "troika" from the beginning. It usually starts out with two frustrated people seeking for the third person to join their vodka drinking ceremony. After they find an appropriate candidate, they ask him if he wants to become the "third" by saying "Tret'im budesh??".
Normally noone refuses from a free glass of a 40-degree drink.

Hello Doodle!: Nick did tell us that story, actually, I just forgot to recount it because it isn't strickly part of the "rules", but I remember him telling us about the hunting down of the third person by twosomes in need of a drink. I thought it was a wonderfully odd obligation surrounding getting drunk. ;)
m_y_eda: those are some mighty big glasses. I don't think anyone but a born-and-raised true Russian could deal with a 200ml shot of vodka...

Good job explaining the rules. I constantly battle with my non-Russian friends to stick to #3. "Cheers" is neither a sentence nor a proper toast! Its like coming to a birthday party and telling the host, "happy!".
