What may well go down as one of the most unusual, and temporary open tops was used by Dublin Bus for one journey only in 1987.
With an almost non existent fleet available as open tops a major requirement in July of that year took place when Stephen Roche won the prestigious 'Tour De France' cycle race.
The only suitable vehicle in the fleet to transport the victorious team was 'D360' which was prepared in a very short time. The event in Irish sport at the time was huge, with a strong local Press Corps and International Press teams covering the event.
The International Press teams required a second open top, and quite simply none was available. a quasi solution was to lift the freshly outshopped 'DF781' off the 14 route, and after making the vehicle safe by undertaking several unseen modifications by a very dedicated team from Donnybrook garage in record time, DF781 became a temporary open top for exclusive use of the media photographers. Recently repainted 'D754' was also used for the press people.
