A patch of Bittercress

A patch of Bittercress

I'm fairly convinced that this is Hairy Bittercress despite not being able to see any hairs on the leaves. It's just about the only plant showing any signs of life right now (wild garlic/onions are coming up too.)

What is this?

What is this?

This little plant is growing quite well in Ohio in the winter. It seems to love the cold. I have never seen it growing in warmer months. My finger is there for scale, to show just how tiny it is.

Wintercress in February

Wintercress in February

While not in a particularly edible state at the moment, my transplanted wintercress is still alive. The sub-freezing temperatures (and some hungry insects) have damaged the leaves somewhat. The smaller-leafed plant growing in the periphery is chickweed (also transplanted to this garden by me). In only a few weeks time these plants will be showing fresh growth and I will be able to have a nice salad.
