The decisive moment

The decisive moment

I and Dick Zakia, who I’ve recently had the pleasure of meeting, have been discussing Cartier-Bresson’s concept of the “decisive moment.” In a nutshell, it’s when a photographer intuitively captures the moment when the visual and psychological aspects of a scene come together to express the essence of meaning of that scene. It’s one of the most widely cited, elusive, and controversial ideas in the history of photography. Some say it’s what photography is all about.

Another drive-by shot. As often happens in my photostream, I've slipped into a kind of riff, although I'm not sure if it qualifies as a "visual riff":

Deception

Deception

Another drive-by shot. I just barely got this one. As I mentioned in the conversation for the previous image, you can't think too much in drive-by photography. Notice, shoot. I wonder if Cartier-Bresson ever considered drive-by "decisive moments."

The Tao of LA

The Tao of LA

Adam asked if I had any other palm tree photos. Yep!.... Like the previous one, this was a drive-by. I plan on writing an article about drive-by shooting for my online book Photographic Psychology.

Rule #1: Don't be the driver!!!
