mt. rainier national park

in this town, which on this day held the record for the hottest documented temperature in the world, a group of children stood in line for health screenings. many had never seen a doctor in their lives and were quite unnerved. the older kids went first and offered comfort to the younger as they waited.

in an impossibly long line, everyone with their largest containers, waiting for their turn to access a pipe which was painfully slow in its dripping of water. non-potable, of course, but the only available source during the dry season for this heavily populated section of kathmandu. the queues run for hours in these areas, with some reports of a daily demand at 320 million liters, and a supply of only 70 million liters in the dry season.

puppies and kids...always a good combo, the world over.

this pile of cuteness was stationed at the top of the seemingly unending and insanely steep stone staircase that climbed the hillside on the way to Ghandruk. i heard them long before i could see them, their giggles and puppy yips echoing off the rocks. this still makes me smile, all these months later.
