African Lioness

Panthera leo

Unlike other cats, lions live in social groups called prides that consist of a handful of females and their young and a coalition of two to three males. Males protect the pride and their territory by roaring and scent-marking as they patrol the area.

As the dominant predator on the African savannah, lions can take the largest prey of any other carnivore in the region. Working cooperatively as a team, the lions stalk and surround their prey, getting as close as they can before launching an attack. They are successful in only one of every four hunts.

Fact File

Where to see them: Siegfried & Roy's White Lion exhibit

Height: Male - Up to 4 ft, Female - Up to 3.6 ft

Weight: Male - 330 to 530 lbs, Female - 270 to 400 lbs

Lifespan: Up to 18 yrs in the wild

Habitat: Savannah, arid woodland, and scrubland

Diet: Primarily hoofed mammals such as gazelles and zebras; some small mammals, birds, and reptiles

Note:

It’s in the genes: A recessive gene resulting in a light-colored coat distinguishes the white lion from other lions, though they are members of the same species.

I think this lioness is named Gracious, hence the title. Have a nice weekend everyone!

Cougar

Puma concolor

Historically, the cougar ranged throughout the Americas. In North America, the cougar still roams the western half of the continent and a small population survives in southern Florida. As a predator, the cougar plays an important role in controlling and maintaining healthy prey populations, especially of white-tailed deer. In areas where the cougar has disappeared, such as the eastern United States, the deer population has exploded. Too many deer eat too many saplings and threaten the forest's ability to thrive.

Fact File

Where to see them: Night Hunters

Length: 3.4 to 6.4 ft

Weight: 79.4 to 227 lbs

Lifespan: Up to 17 yrs in the wild

Habitat: Desert, savannah, tropical rainforest, forest, scrubland, and mountain areas

Diet: Mammals ranging in size from mice to white-tailed deer

Blue Tree Monitor

Varanus macraei

Scientists describe newly discovered species of monitors still today. The blue tree monitor, for example, was only just discovered in 2001 on the small Indonesian island of Batanta. Very little is known about its natural history.

Fact File

Where to see them: Reptile House

Length: Up to 3.6 ft

Lifespan: More than 10 yrs

Habitat: Tropical forest

Diet: Small animals, such as insects and frogs, and eggs

The type of monitor shown above could be incorrect since I forgot to look at the sign. Go figure! Anyway if anyone knows for sure what the species is I ask that you correct me on this please. In the meantime you all get a description of one of the fabulous monitors at our zoo.
Have a wonderful weekend everyone!
