      I tried both of those crops. For the sake of discussion I'll explain why I didn't use them. Even though they're both good suggestions.

      She is this single struggling mother on the cusp of big time stardom. I wanted the picture to feel like that.

      CLOSE CROP
      I felt like she needed empty space around her. To give the photo that feeling that this is the last time she'll have that quiet space before fame closes in.

      THE LEFT
      I didn't want her in the center because sort of symbollically she's not there yet. I also didn't want to do a 16:9 crop because it's a movie crop and again that would feel like she had "arrived". 3:2 or 1.618 crops would sort of feel the same way. An empty box that had her off center, up against an unknown edge felt like the right "story"

      Lol. It's easy to overthink these things, but for what it's worth, that was the thinking that went into the crop.

      It's dark because today is anti SOPA day. Somebody darkened it for 24 hours as part of the protest. The text explaining that doesn't show up when you view it?
