Inspired by this photo from the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. The sunlight was shining on this spider's web for just a few minutes. Unfortunately the web was hanging from a green garden chair, so I didn't get the background as dark as I'd like and I didn't have much leeway for composition else I'd have got the different colours of the chair. I'd like to try this again with a better located web as I like the interesting patterns formed by the light shining through the out-of-focus strands!

A spider's web in the garden, after the rain, at night. I used a torch to illuminate the web. The hardest part was illuminating the web strands without shining too much light on the wall behind! There was no other light source, so everything you see is reflected off the web.

Optical fibres are thin tubes which transmit light from one end to the other. They are used for high-speed long-distance communication by transmitting pulses of light, and form the basis of many modern-day communication networks. Oh, and they also make pretty patterns when made into lamps!

If you are so inclined, you can recreate the effect with a plastic bottle and a torch.

This was one of the experiments on the theme of Communication that the Cambridgeshire branch of the British Science Association showcased at last year's National Science and Engineering Week. NSEW 2012 runs from 9-18th March, look out for events near you!

Another rainy day picture! This one was taken just before dusk, but I played with the colouring a bit to make it bluer, which I think suits the pic better.
