Last Friday, Edgar Thissen, Roeselien Raimond and my niece Charlotte met up at the AWD (Amsterdamse Waterleiding Duinen). The Reserve is
immense and although I've been there a couple of times now, I
absolutely got lost after the other 3 barged off without warning while
I was examining a small hill for fox-dens, upon hearing deer bellowing
in the distance.
Pretty *beep!* off, I was standing on an unfamiliar road, trying to let the others know where I was through my cell phone, as a very kind gentleman came up to me and asked if I were aware that there was a huge herd of deer some 200 meters from where I was standing and led me to them. I couldn’t believe my eyes when we arrived at a small valley where about 50 deer were feeding, resting, fighting, bellowing and competing for the does’ favors. The gentleman proved to be even kinder as he also led Edgar, Roes and Charlotte to me, after finding them 15 minutes later wandering around looking for me. I filled 6 memory cards in the hours we spent with the deer! You can probably imagine that it will take some time to sort those out.
Finally, when the sun was already setting, with pain in our hearts we had to leave the Reserve, but still had 5 km to walk towards the car. Charlotte and I decided to take the path alongside the small stream. All of a sudden this magnificent Stag stepped out of the bushes, walked towards the stream and started to drink. We froze on the spot, completely enchanted by the serenety of this beautiful autumn colored scene.
ps: To the kind gentleman that led me to the deer; please contact me!!
Without you we wouldn’t have had such an unforgettable day! Thank you
so much, once again!
ps2: meanwhile the name of the kind gentleman is known; Mr. van Kesteren, you are a hero, thank you so much!!
