WOW!!! So there's more people out there who likes the work of this illustrator!
I never knew his/her name, but I've always loved his/her work. I have several illustrations by this same person in some French books published by Hachette in the sixties. For me it always was “that cool illustrator from the Hachette books”. The style is so personal that it's easily recognizable.
I'll see if I can find the name listed in the books' editorial credits. (I've tried this before, but each book has images from several sources and the credits just mention the names of the authors, without attributing each work to its author...)
Edited some minutes later: I can see “C. Harper” among other names, so it seems that Cocoakoala was right!

I have a book called 'the golden pleasure book of biology' [published by - paul hamlyn. london] illustrations attributed to charles harper 1962.
it's full of illustrations!
maybe we should gang together and harrass the publishers or the illustrator himself to release a nice "coffee table art" (I hate that term!) book of his illustrations. i'm sure id happily fork out £30 for a nicely bound collection of his works.

Spooky - I'm sure I have a copy of "The Golden Pleasure Book of Biology", too. I'll have to go visit my mother sometime as I won it as school science prize in 196X, so it's probably in her attic. What a weird experience to see that inside cover again after all those years! Thanks, mohawk.
