We spent the Canada Day weekend in Algonquin, car-camping and doing day-trips. On Friday, we paddled from the outfitter at Opeongo to the campground at Lake of Two Rivers. The route took us through Sproule, Sunday, Little Rock, Pond, and Kearney Lakes before gaining access to Whitefish Lake, Pog Lake, and finally, Lake of Two Rivers. This snapping turtle was sunning on a rock that stuck out a meter above the surface of the water immediately in front of the portage from Little Rock Lake to Pond Lake. For perspective, we estimated the length of the shell to be at least 50 cm. It was completely unintimidated by our presence.
