Week 8/52: Moon, Venus, and Jupiter on February 25, 2012

SONY SLT-A77V | 17mm F4 20" ISO400 DSC00616

For much of the world, the moon and Venus – the sky’s brightest planet – will pair up closest together for the month this evening (Saturday, February 25). Depending on where you live, you may even see the moon and Venus – nighttime’s brightest and second-brightest heavenly bodies, respectively – taking stage within a single binocular field of view. And to triple your pleasure, look for the third-brightest heavenly body of nighttime – the planet Jupiter – above the moon and Venus. (More about tonight's sky at earthsky.org/tonight/moon-and-venus-closest-for-the-month... )

My son boarded this train about 100 miles away and sent me location updates via text so that I could capture this image as the Amtrak Cardinal from Chicago to New York blazed through our hometown of Catlett Station at 69 MPH about a half-hour after sunset. You can almost make-out his face in the second car (not really, but that's where he was sitting).
