Moss, Lichen, Rocks 1, Þingvellir 1.4

Charcoal on paper, 33 x 22", end of fourth session. The rocks begin to take shape, and the values start to come into line with each other. In the next session I'll work on the overhanging moss.

Moss and Rocks 1, Þingvellir 1.2

Charcoal on paper, 22 x 33", end of session 2. This drawing is of large soft masses of moss growing above flat, cracked rock surfaces covered with white lichens. The challenge will be to convey the contrast in textures between the living plants and the rocks which share a fairly narrow value range, while keeping the strong abstract quality of the forms.
