The Goosenecks

The Goosenecks

The incredibly tight meanders of the San Juan River, near Mexican Hat, Utah. The river is around 1000feet below.

Black Fives, Black Weather.

Black Fives, Black Weather.

My attempt at rescuing a write-off! The afternoon of February 18th was a mix of bright sun and vicious snow squalls from the north-west. Here, Black Fives 44932 and 45305 forge past Smardale in such a squall with the Cumbrian Mountain Express. I failed to realise that the line swings from north-south to west-east here for a few hundred yards, resulting in the obliteration of the train by smoke. I've tried to recover something by cropping heavily and converting to BW. No great merit as a photo, but it does convey a certain amount of atmosphere and the trials and tribulations of railway photography!

Sunshine and Steam at Shap.

Sunshine and Steam at Shap.

A rare combination! But a strong north-wester is blowing against Black Fives 44932 and 45305 as they work the Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express ( rededicated as the George Hinchcliife Special) up to Shap summit on February 18th 2012.
