Trevor Wilkinson originally founded a company called Trevcar Motors in 1947 in his home town of Blackpool with the intention of selling and repairing cars and light engineering. The first car a special based on an Alvis was also built in 1947 and Wilkinson started a separate company TVR Engineering based on his christian name. TreVoR. Wilkinson retired in 1962.
The company passed through the ownerships of Martin Lilley 1965-81 and Peter Wheeler 1981-04 before falling into the hands of a 24 year old Russian. Nikolay Smolensky pledging that the company would remain British. By 2006 he had announced body and final assembly would move to Turin, Italy. In December 2006 the company was split into four different companies. Brand and intellectual rights were transferred to a Smolensky core company,
TVR MOTORS held licences to brands and intellectual properties in the UK and sales and marketing of the brand
TVR POWER the parts and spares business were sold to a management buyout
BLACKPOOL AUTOMOTIVE the factory and manufacturing assests
The current situation is very fluid and ownership is also in question but it would appear that Smolensky still owns the company
