downtown los angeles skyline...
if you have a long enough lens you can get a really good shot from the observatory. this was taken at 200mm with minimal cropping. one of my photographic goals was to get a really good shot of the downtown buildings and i've sort of managed to fulfill that, i'd like to get a more closer shot of the buildings but finding a good spot that's also safe is hard to find...

Very nice. I'll have to try this with my 70-200mm f/2.8G VR and a teleconverter. Can you drive to the observatory now or do you have to take a shuttle still?
airencracken (52 months ago | reply)
Beautiful shot. Brilliant really.

lori... i'll take that as a compliment!
wicked queen... thanks!
disneymike... thanks man. yeah bring your teleconverter! i have one but left it at home. and from what i saw, you can drive up there now. we took the shuttle because we came straight from the chinatown parade and took the metro to vermont and sunset where there is a shuttle that takes you up to the observatory every half hour.
airencracken.. thanks dude!

Yes, I was speechless. Thanks for catching this beauty.

airencracken... yeah, but in a situation like this when there's thousands of people in the same area and we're walking around, it's bound to happen that a group as big as ours would separate. eventually i even got separated from them. but its okay, as you said... there's next time.
lori... well thanks!

Absolutely gorgeous. I lived in LA for 15 years and know exactly the view you're talking about. This is simply terrific!

Fantastic skyline shot, reminds me of all the childhood summer nights up on the roof of the Griffith, and all of LA spread out below.

I've never been to LA so I don't know how hard it is to get a good shot of the skyline (other than what you wrote), but doing this sort of shoot at 200mm is pretty neat imho. :)

Really fantastic nighttime photo and view. I'll have to try out the Twilight mode of my digital camcorder one of these nights. My digital still point-and-shoot camera (no digital SLR just yet) has a Night mode, but a tripod is required for that, and I don't own a tripod, so I'd have to use Landscape for nighttime shots if not using the digital camcorder. :-)

st paul paul... i've also lived in la countyfor almost fifteen years... and its taken me a long time but i think this is easily the best shot i've taken of downtown LA.
audrey's dad... would be nice to see this view on a regular basis over a couple years and see how it changes!
timove... i'm sure there are lots of good photo spots for downtown LA, i've probably been too lazy to find it but if you ever come and have a good zoom lens, then you know where to go!
chrisser... when you go to the griffith observatory and look out over this view, there's actually a wall that you can rest your camera on so that you get a really good shot. on your p&s camera, try the night mode but without the flash. good luck!
to everyone else... thanks for the comments!

Wow - you did a great job here! Gorgeous cityscape. I understand about wanting to be safe. I'm trying to figure out where to take the lunar eclipse photographs this next week.
