Unfortunately the vehicle nearly always comes off 2nd best, if a roo, they just sometimes hop away, if an emu, well anyone's guess.

I wish that were true. I have never seen a roo or emu hit without the long shin bone breaking, although I have seen roos hop a fair distance before they collapse.
They can certainly do planty of damage though. I had an emu one time which bent a steel bull bar back so far I couldn't open the bonnet of the ute.
