WIMBORNE RD WINTON. LESLIE RD NEXT RIGHT. BOURNEMOUTH c1980

Wimborne Rd Winton with Leslie Rd the next right as seen circa 1980.

On the far corner of Leslie Rd is George Wesley menswear.

Sainsbury's occupied 358 / 362 Wimborne Rd from the early 60's before moving further down Wimborne Rd to what is now Wilkinsons. They also had a branch at the old Hampshire Centre but when this was redeveloped as Castlepoint the Winton branch closed. The building seen here is now home to Boots.

Wilkins the Bakers, note their lorry on the left about to deliver fresh supplies, occupied 364 Wimborne Rd from the early 30's until they closed their chain of local shops in the late 1980's.

Wilkins had some 15 stores throughout Bournemouth and a large factory in Malmesbury Park Rd that produced Sunblest, Kingsmill and Allinson bread amongst many others.

Initially they were a successful local company before being purchased by Westons [ W. Garfield Weston ] c1930, who went on to form Allied Bakeries, and ultimately Associated British Foods [ ABF ] .

The factory in Malmesbury Park Rd closed in the 1990's and production was transferred to more modern ''super bakeries'' closer to London.
