"Out of the Soup"

"Out of the Soup"

Using a propellor you can skip into the sky. Out of the muck, the glue... the soup of the atmosphere, trading it for the less dense, clean, and undisturbed air. Lifting up and out of the 'soup' is subtle, in a small craft. It can take a long time to reach altitude. Coming down though, can be more dramatic. When returning quickly, shedding off large amounts of altitude has the most impressive effect. You become acutely aware of the thickness of the 'soup'. You can feel the change in the atmosphere on your skin, in the control surfaces (rudder, elevator, ailerons) and in your ears thus affecting your hearing. Humidity of the denser air is also very palpable. As the pressure increases and as the sounds of the slipstream and engine diminish, (ears need popping) you're left with the peculiar sense of slipping back into the 'soup'. For a skydiver it's quite dramatic. The atmosphere becomes very tangible. You may have only left earth's surface for an hour and yet, on your return, the effects of the changes of pressure have changed your body. You sense the atmosphere a little differently than when you started.
