Rita Crane Photography: France / Paris / marais / street / vintage / buildings / beautiful / Rue du Temple, Paris

[Four images here for you, Flickr friends -- of Paris -- all mostly neutral tones and each a glimpse of the human side of Paris. Scroll down for the other three.]
Technical note: I did selective color treatment here in PS, removing green, cyan, magenta, and blue, as it was late afternoon and the day's light was fading when I took the picture. I didn't have a tripod, so no chance to get a long exposure and recover the dim colors with a long exposure. I used a very slight bit of blur to soften the mood, then used Channel Mixer to give an overall warm toned effect.
Description: Red Lanterns on Rue du Temple!! One more reason to love Paris and France: a country that has accepted diverse cultures for centuries. How delightful to discover this scene as I was wandering around the Marais, on Chinese New Year 2007. I had come to Paris to photograph historic cafes for a series I am working on, and was crossing through the Marais looking for motifs. I wasn't expecting this: Ancient China meets Rue du Temple in Paris!! My dear, lovely, fascinating Paris.....you are full of surprises!

Here is another view of this charming scene along the Rue du Temple. I went ahead and turned this photo into a selective color image as well, to better highlight the red lanterns:
"Rue du Temple, Marais District, Paris"

Another glimpse of everyday Paris...

"Companions, Quai des Grands Augustins"
Across from the Ile de la Cite by the Seine, this woman was walking with her faithful companion, in a scene that is typical of real Paris. There was something poignant about this little pair : a sense both of loneliness and of belonging....... in a Paris larger than life that belongs to her citizens, and also to the entire world that so much loves this fascinating city.

"Children at St. Sulpice Fountain, Paris"
Je dois dire que Paris est plein de petites surprises!!
Paris is full of little surprises. :o) I had just about given up on trying to get a photo of historic buildings that afternoon because of the crowds and traffic, when these little treasures walked into my frame and they were such a surprising contrast to the savage looking lion I couldn't help but notice the fun juxtaposition. Their father had asked them to stand near the fountain, and while he clicked away, so did I! They brought a big smile to my face and made my day.
I have to say it was a turning point for me in photography. It was as if the appearance of these little elves was telling me something. All day I had fretted about not having found my perfect motif....and I was struggling with the anxiety that comes to me sometimes when I feel the days slipping by in Paris, without having shot what I came for. When these sweet children showed up, it was almost like magic! It is as if they came to remind me: "Like life, photography is an adventure. You never can predict what will manifest, but it is always interesting and worthwhile, so relax and enjoy the ride!!" Thanks to these little elves for that. (And glad that big mean lion didn't get you!!!)

Hello Rita!
Congratulations on Explore!.
This is lovely - the red lanterns against Paris shades of grey. - agree the rue du Temple is an odd place to find them!. The mairie facing onto Place St Sulpice has a great display each year - the weather and light are great today - I may go out later today and see what I see! And nice to post it for this Chinese New Year. Happy Year of the Rat - it's supposed to be VERY auspicious!.
Best wishes!

Very Parisian! It reminds me a little of the street I lived in and my view when I leaned out of the window. There were all kinds of restaurants along it - Vietnamese, Cambodian, Italian, Spanish, Algerian, it was a whole world unto itself.
