Making Sugar

Active Assignment for the week of Feb 9th - 16th: Our Industrial World

WIT: Over my lunch hour I took a short trip across the river and visited the American Crystal Sugar plant in East Grand Forks, MN. This is one of five such plants along the North Dakota-Minnesota border. In the spring and early summer you would be glad this isn't a scratch and sniff photo. Cropped and levels/curves adjusted.

ooohh...like the various smoke stacks that you got. It's classic industry. The white in the smoke is very white. Nice contrast with the rest of the picture. Great shot.

The usual great sharpness and colours that you seem to achieve in all your pictures. The steam from the chimney dominates the image, and your cropping to make the steam head toward the top right really makes this work. Great job.

Very well done! The colors/composition are excellent. Scratch-n-sniff :)

I really like the contrast between the white organic shapes in the smoke and the rigid "cold" metal in the plant. Very well done!

The clarity of that smoke is just awesome! I like the tiny pops of brick, but also that this has so much contrast for such a monochromatic picture through the building textures. I like it.

      Bloody great CLOUDS of steam!

The smoke really makes the photo and the sky makes a very good background giving a whole blue tone to the picture. Very good composition

This image looks powerfully cold. Really nice capture and great detail.

A quintessential smoke stack shot. I like to think of these things as being cloud factories. Too bad the clouds they make are not benign.

This is a great image. I kept coming back to it and it took me a while to figure out why. The smoke from the cloud is in a strong diagonal shape repeating the power of the sugar plant. The photo is executed perfectly.

I echo everyone before me. The smoke coming from the chimneys looks very palpable.

Well done! This is what I think of when I think "industry". I see these types of plants in Idaho. I really like the steam, that makes the shot for me. Well done!
