Puff Daddy George, 2/2
$1 USD + Puff Stars = strange, shrunken money
(Really, this looks best large - give it a try)
Remixing the ever-popular puffstar tessellations ala Melisande and Owesen to give me a strange little landscape made up of puffy dollar bill segments.
Probably the first and last time I will do such a thing with a dollar- the paper is much too annoying to fold in such a fashion.
The hilarity of watching all the humorous shapes that George Washington made while folding was really worth it, though...

Good to see you folding 3D stars
EricGjerde (72 months ago | reply)
My first effort at folding them, I was surprised at how easy they were to fold. It's a lot of fun, you just make a bunch of triangular squashes and then pop open the hexagons. very easy to do!
Obrigado, everyone!

holy money!
what awesomeness have we here?
AH- Now I'm doubly saddened to miss the convention-
but may be back in town Sunday eve to catch up?

Haha ! For your first try at puff stars, you rock !
we say : coup d'essai, coup de maître !
In my country we don't fold money, for reasons I explained here
For your next work, you should consider folding something like stars and stripes, shouldn't you ?
(you have 12 days....)
LorenzoMarchi (72 months ago | reply)
Very funny eric, there's always a first time to fold 3d stars!!
I like a lot the bottom right star, that with the signature!! You could sell a lot of them to make money, which you could use to fold...hmm it's recoursive!
EricGjerde (72 months ago | reply)
@Bean: I'll be in NYC until July 1st, so there's ample time for you to check out the folded goodness, if you like. I'm trying to figure out a meet-up w/ Ranjit if possible, too, while I'm in your happy burg.
@Melisande: They only came out well thanks to your helpful tips about squashing and then expanding! Otherwise I would not have considered it, even. Since our money is practically worthless these days, I'll have to send you some of our american pesos to you via snail mail, and thusly you can leave those nice, fat 10 Swiss Franc notes alone!
@Lorenzo: The thought of a recursive money-folding scheme is pretty funny- charge $2 for each $1 piece of art, eventually I become wealthy? Or perhaps my fingers fall off, first!

hahaha... now I'm a little scared... !
glad you like it, it is nothing special. thanks go to Melisande and Fredrik for the wonderful design and easy-to-fold technique!
Mélisande* (72 months ago | reply)
Fredrik himself actually explained here how to fold these stars. I learned by reading this.
All this happened in that prehistorical era, when you two were the only tessellators on Flickr...
EricGjerde (72 months ago | reply)
That was eons ago, indeed.
got some good ideas from the convention about working with money, though.
keep your eyes on this space for some new fun!

hey hey! i did get to pop my head into the convention on saturday...convinced my little penn station headed crew too. mostly saw the line of models/classes....very cool.
any plans w/ ranjit? keep me posted.
hope you are enjoying nyc despite the crazy humidity!
EricGjerde (72 months ago | reply)
Bummer, I missed you- would have been fun to show you some of the goodies.
The crew of attendees was a little odd, but I'm not really one to talk, I guess. the FIT is an interesting joint, although the area seems a little lacking for surrounding "good eats" (or at least not without a local guide!)
I'll shoot you an email about possible plans! and the humidity is killing me here. at least it's not flooding, right?

I can't believe this photo has had over 10,000 views. That's just crazy.
Bean, did you ever unfold this thing and spend it? if you've still got it around, you should write the URL on it and send it back into circulation...
I think this photo has ended up on a couple of different printing projects, including the Texas A&M student financial aid handbook. go figure. (yes, they asked.)
Funny, funny, funny.

So cool. Can't even begin to figure out how to do that! Hope you don't mind that I've used it on a hubpage. Please take a second to check out the attribution. I'll be happy to change it or remove the picture if you aren't pleased.

Well, rather than using it and then mentioning your use to me - which violates the CC license clause I have assigned to it - it would have been appropriate to ask me before hand. I likely would have said yes.
However since you did not, I must ask that you stop using it on your commercial site. I'll even go one better and send you an email asking you to stop using it, a courtesy which if extended to me initially would have gained you permission.
I appreciate your compliments, but I assigned the non-commercial attribute for a reason, and I would ask that you respect that. Thanks!
twohandtouch (49 months ago | reply)
First, and foremost, my apologies.
I am sorry to hear that using the photo first and then notifying you afterwards was your singular reason for asking for it's removal. I really thought it was great work and you wouldn't mind sharing it with a wider audience. But still, it's your work which means you and only you get to decide how it's used. You know what they say about people who assume....
But there is something I'd feel better about you knowing. After reading your post I realized that I neglected to click "commercial" when I was searching for images to use. It was an honest mistake and again, I apologize. I didn't contact you before I posted it because I was unaware that I had *made* such a mistake. And furthermore, because I thought I *was* in the bounds of proper usage, I only posted in the comments as a courtesy, again, mistakingly thinking you would be pleased that someone used your work.
I will treat this as a learning lesson and be sure to double check that I am within the bounds of proper usage in the future.
I sincerely apologize and hope your wrath for me has diminished.
I too will also send this to the email address you've provided and you can rest assured the image has been removed.

Go, Eric! Freedom is not license. I've had a couple of these after-the-fact commercial "compliments" and I've been flummoxed by them. Your response is a good one, well-spoken and proportionate to the offense, and I will copy it verbatim without permission the next time it happens to me.
