The recent demolition of the Trinity Square car park attracted considerable attention and heralded major changes for the town centre and its residents. As part of his degree and also for his personal records, Hook captured the various stages of the demolition as a way of creating a visual documentary narrative of the site. He also documented reactions to the process within a social context, by photographing the public’s interest in observing the demolition while they gazed through the hoardings’ spy holes to witness the death-throes of this landmark building. In charting the shifting landscape, Hook’s images offer a voyeuristic insight into passersby who have stopped to study the demolition, peering through the site’s hoardings to discover the curious and changing scene within. These observations reveal the human side of the urban structure, capturing the intrigue surrounding its demolition.
Through social documentary and street photography, Parking Expired celebrates the iconic building and acknowledges its passing, whilst hoping to create debate around expectations of what is to come and the future of Gateshead and its residents.
