Thousands of people commute weekly through these old Lackawanna Railroad tunnels in Hoboken, but none of them ever have a chance to really take a close look at the tunnels from a speeding train. (Feb. 2012)

Right where the Grove of Remembrance in Liberty State Park is now, once stood the Central Railroad of New Jersey Engine terminal. Manhattan looks on as if from a different world. Jersey City. 1979

National Docks Grain Elevator and old wooden barges surrounded by a bleak but stangely peaceful setting at Black Tom in Jersey City where the lower end of Liberty State Park is now. 1952

You can almost smell the salt air and feel the absolute stillness of the moment.

Another Now and Then view. The very end of Greene Street in Jersey City looking toward the Morris Canal, Liberty State Park, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty....BUT... it didn't always look like this. (See the link to 1975)

Just another lazy summer Sunday by the park in JC. There was a time when you didn't necessarily want to hang out here too long.

Now and Then view. Today, it's the Liberty Harbor parking lot with plastic palm trees by the Marina bar and a great view of Manhattan... BUT... it didn't always look this way. (see below). Jersey City, New Jersey

How it looks now (with a link to 1951). The Pennsylvania Railroad's Harsimus Stem Embankment which people are trying to save as a linear park. No more railroad tracks, but a real forest! Looking west at 6th Street. Jersey City.

The Pennsylvania Railroad's Harsimus Stem Embankment which people are now trying to save as a linear park looked mercilessly bleak in 1951. Looking west at 6th Street. Jersey City.

A little bit of the old Jersey City lives on at the end of the Morris Canal even as the rest of the world changes around it. Where vintage tugboats and red cranes go to die. Feb 2012

Now and Then view: The viaduct for westbound traffic from the Holland Tunnel as it looks now with dumbed-down signs, and the Emerson Radio factory an abandoned relic. The art deco signpost is still the same, although the I-beam is now rusty. Jersey City

No more cool neon road signs like in the 1953 view.

Colgate Clock on top of the Colgate plant in Jersey City. At night it would glow with hundreds of light bulbs. A giant toothpaste tube stood to its right with a striped cap. This shows the very beginning of the factory's demolition in 1988.

Long retired, the Colgate Clock in Jersey City sits in a weedy field by the Morris Canal. Life goes on in Lower Manhattan on a dreary winter day as the World Trade Center grows taller. Feb 2012.
