Today is the Day That I Happily Refuse to Purchase and iPhone

That's interesting, because today also just so happens to be the day that I secretly think about the iPhone, but fail to afford it, and instead tell everyone about how slow its network is, while still, secretly lusting after the iPhone.

It's also the day that I move to your town.

Just lusting after the iPhone is the same as actually having one (according to the bible anyway)... If you had an N800 with the added NavKit, it would guide you right in... Safe moving!

Though faithful to my middle-of-the-road Samsung T509, I have commited iAdultery many times in my heart.

Wait, then this means that today is the day I realize that what I've suspected since that fateful Apple keynote has been true all along--my fiance has been cheating on me with the iPhone. I knew I should have hired that private investigator when I had the chance...

The Nokia N800 = BYOC (Bring your own connection). YUK. Tried it for a week and returned it. NO JAVA VM - NO Built-in GPRS - Cell-Phone tethering is hit or miss....

    6. timsamoff (60 months ago | reply)

Robert ~ I am praying for you.

Mary ~ Admitting that you need a private investigator is the first step toward recovery. (Or something.)

Interstink ~ Me thinks you just didn't have a good experience... My experience on the other hand has been nothing but good. And, a whole lot cheaper than $99/mo for an anytime connection.

Meanwhile TOT sits in the corner with his little Motorola Razar, secertly wishing he was part of the cool kids group, as one silent tear he sheds.

Oooh oooh oooh! I can do that too!

      :)

    11. timsamoff (60 months ago | reply)

TOT ~ Razrs are cool too -- at least you can use customized ring tones! (Unlike the iPhone, btw.) ;)

James ~ Yeah! We need to schedule a time to get video chat all worked out!

You got one, didn't you, Scott?! :P

    13. Scott Docherty (60 months ago | reply)

Nope. I am waiting for the PC version to come out later this summer ...

      ;)

My feeling is that anyone who's willing to wait in line for days to spend over 500 dollars for a cellphone (service not included) that will start becoming obsolete as soon as you step out of the store, should take that wonderful phone and use it to make an appointment for the psychiatric help they so desperately need...

    16. timsamoff (60 months ago | reply)

Oh, man... Harsh. But, I will neither confirm nor deny what you said. ;)

So I just pulled the trigger and bought one of these... How do you like it? I got it to surf the web and also check email on the go. Anything else really cool you like or really dis like about it ? Thanks

    21. timsamoff (59 months ago | reply)

I LOVE it! It pretty much does everything I was looking for in a handheld device and it's small enough to take everywhere. BUT, that comes at a slight cost... Be prepared to get dirty and learn the nuts and bolts of the thing. This isn't just a device you can turn on and be done with -- it can be very technical and a little confusing at times. But, once you learn how to install apps, configure certain settings, etc., it's a dream. Congratulations!

Tis trash next to an iPhone. Absolute and utter trash.

    24. timsamoff (58 months ago | reply)

Dean, I beg to differ. Seriously. But, I'd hardly blame you for thinking that if you don't own an N800.

    25. Qole Pejorian (56 months ago | reply)

The N800 is selling all over for $250 or less. It's gotten a lot cheaper than an iPhone now. And with my N800 I can set up a secure tunnel to my home network via ssh and then get a remote desktop with VNC. And how cool is Skype? Really cool, that's how cool. Waiting patiently for video calling with Skype. Ok. Not patiently. But waiting.

i played with one of these at a store last night and i really like it. i know that linux supports yahoo chat with video via kopete. does kopete run on the n800?

    27. timsamoff (56 months ago | reply)

Mustafa ~ Kopete is not currently available for the N800/810, but it could probably be ported if you have the know-how.

There are a few chat apps that are currently available, though: Google Talk (core), Pidgin (3rd party), Skype (3rd party), etc.

Unfortunately, video chat is still a bit of an issue with these devices. The functionality always seems to hover somewhere around Alpha. But, hopefully, the new OS (to be released sometime in November) will fix some of this.

    28. Mustafa Maluka (56 months ago | reply)

thanks for the speedy answer :) i mostly use google talk but i've never used it with video ever! i will try to test it in ubuntu before i buy one.

    29. timsamoff (55 months ago | reply)

Any time! (Although, this one wasn't so speedy, was it?)

    30. Qole Pejorian (55 months ago | reply)

Looks like the Gizmo project will be first out of the gate with video chat to the PC! They claim to have a video-capable version for OS 2008!

My wife has dubbed my N800 the "mini-mistress" 'cause I always seem to be poking around on it.

    31. Mustafa Maluka (55 months ago | reply)

i've had mine for a week now :) i've already flashed it to OS2008. UKMP is awesome!!!

    32. timsamoff (55 months ago | reply)

Qol ~ Yeah, some people have already reported using OS2008/Gizmo video successfully. And, unfortunately, I think your wife and mine would find a lot in common in that regard.

Mustafa ~ Congratulations! :) I think the upcoming version of UKTube should come with an icon that I created!

    33. Mustafa Maluka (55 months ago | reply)

Awesome!!! Congrats! I can't wait to see it.

I called my wife's cell phone from my N800 using Skype last night, sitting in a cafe and eating a muffin. I used the cafe's free wifi. I had to stop the Internet radio stream and I had to minimize the e-book I was reading, first. Can the iPhone do that?

I'm pretty sure the iPhone can't do this:

    35. Chris Green Monster (54 months ago | reply)

Qole Pejorian You don't have to stop any app while using another app in iPhone. it just works because it's multitasking and it's fast.

On the other hand, you have to stop all apps except Skype before you can use skype because N800 isn't multitasking wise.

    36. timsamoff (54 months ago | reply)

Chris... Hmmm... I haven't had that experience. :-/

    37. joshkeller (54 months ago | reply)

i dont understand whats so good about this, its not anything i think anyone i know would use, but what works for you works for you.

    38. timsamoff (54 months ago | reply)

      > its not anything i think
      > anyone i know would
      > use

Interesting. In my opinion, by describing it as such, you're placing the same description on any computer -- because that's basically what the N800 is.

    39. Qole Pejorian (54 months ago | reply)

Chris, I had to stop the music because, um, I was making a phone call and I'm not multitasking enough to concentrate on a phone call with music playing loudly at the same time... And I minimized the e-book so I could see the dial-pad, since, while I enjoy reading novels, they aren't very useful for phone calls, either.

The N800 is perfectly capable of multitasking. I used it this week in the car as a GPS navigator / wayfinder and a iPod-like jukebox, simultaneously. I'm sure the iPhone does that really well, too. What GPS mapping software would you recommend for the iPhone?

Here's my attempt at importing the GPS route data from Maemo Mapper into Google Maps using gpsbabel, a command-line GPS data manipulation program I've installed on my tablet.

Oh, doesn't everybody, Scott? Too bad those things didn't fit in our pockets! ;)

Didn't need to - we were too busy actually sitting down and getting stuff done! 4 whole mgs of ram, baby! Aw, yeah!

Ironic that you would be on this side of the Apple discussion. If you remember, it was you that mentored me with Web design on a IIci!
