Alfred

Alfred

This magnificent bronze Statue, by Hamo Thornycroft, was commissioned by Alderman Bowker and the City Corporation to mark the millennium of Aelfred’s death. It was erected in 1901. It is 2.5 times life size, 15 feet (4.57 m) high, and weighs 5 tons. The base, in two parts, is of Cornish Granite, and the whole stands 40 ft high. The right hand grasps a cross-hilted sword, the symbol of Christianity which was to combat the power of heathenism. The left foot strides forward in a rather Pharonic gesture of Kingship and the subjugation of ones enemies. A Saxon helmet crowns the head, and the left hand rests lightly upon a Saxon circular shield. The cloak, thrown back over the right shoulder, shelters the King and encourages the viewer to walk around the statue to view it face on. The granite pedestal bears just one word - AELFRED.

Winchester Clock

Winchester Clock

The clock, which dates from the end of the 19th century, was discovered to be in poor condition when it was examined in 2009.

The building on which the clock is mounted was the city's former guildhall and is now a bank.

Work on the clock was carried out by a specialist restoration company.

Pictures from the city council archives were used to establish exactly how the clock would have looked originally.

As well as the work to the clock face and workings, the ornate woodwork surrounds were also re-gilded.

Historical Timepiece

The current clock replaced the original which was erected in 1714.

It had been bought for the city by William Paulet, the local member of parliament.

The gift was a reaction to the rival Bridges family who had paid for a nearby statue of Queen Anne.

The act of generosity evidently worked as Paulet was re-elected in 1715.
