It is believed that Parvati worshipped Shiva in the form of a Prithivi Lingam (or a Lingam improvised out of sand), under a mango tree. Legend has it that the neighboring Vegavati river overflowed and threatened to engulf the Shiva Lingam and that Parvati or Kamakshi embraced the Lingam. Shiva touched by the gesture materialized in person and married her. The God here came to be known as Ekambareswarar or "Lord of Mango Tree". More about this temple here.

Ram Chandran, 64, a vaishnav sadhu, had taken sanyaas 30 years back, leaving behind his wife, five children, 40 acres of land that had 3 motors for irrigation. He now lives the life of an ascetic close to the sanctum of Sri Ranganathaswamy temple, the largest Hindu temple by land area in India. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is the main reason for pilgrims flocking to the city of Trichy.
