School bags take a prominent place in this family's one room home. They know school is the key to their future.

It's more than material poverty that threatens these families, it's a psychological poverty, a hopelessness that can lead to a cycle of continued poverty. But the Coptic Orphans volunteers bring more than the basic necessities for life, they bring care and knowledge and inspiration.

Widows and their children are often left destitute after the death of a father, and feel desperately alone, with no one to look after them or care about their well-being. That's where Coptic Orphans comes in.

Coptic Orphans founder Nermien Riad, circa 1988, at the orphanage in Egypt where she volunteered. When she found out that many of the girls had mothers, she began working on a program to support the children to stay at home, with their mothers and siblings, and to get a proper education.
