The woman on my Turkish language tapes was named Ayşe (Ayshe), and I actually met an Ayşe, friend of a friend... But I never knew that about the meaning of Ay-.
I would have guessed the moon would be important to Turks because it's important in Islam, but as always, our friend Wikipedia sheds more light...
According to Wikipedia's article on the Turkish flag, the crescent and star symbol dates back to ancient Babylon and Egypt; in addition, according to this article on the Ottoman flag, the crescent alone was an ancient symbol of Byzantium and Constantinople!
Furthermore--wow--all those flags with crescent+star design are those of countries who gained independence in the early twentieth century and were inspired by Atatürk's reforms (or "reforms," depending on your viewpoint)--so their flags are homage/reference to the Turkish flag, not (as I had always assumed and been told) a reference to the crescent as a Muslim symbol!
Live and learn.

turks also tell such a tale; the Turkish flag consists of a white crescent placed on a red background because Ataturk saw the reflection of the moon on the soldiers' pool of blood who fought for Turkey's independancy when the country was invaded by European states after WWI. well I believe the muslim or byzantine connections are more credible :)
