Another day at the office

Another day at the office

Tsukiji Market is the biggest wholesale fish and seafood markets in the world and also one of the largest wholesale food markets of any kind. 700,000 metric tons of seafood are handled every year at a value of 5.5 billion US dollars!!

The market opens at 4am for locals only. The popular and at times chaotic tuna auctions start at 5am. Tourists are allowed into the bustling market from 9am.

I arrived with camera in hand just after 9am to mid market chaos. There are forklifts everywhere driving down narrow paths whizzing by hard working locals and bumbling tourists. This market is truly a sight to be seen!

Taking a breather!

Taking a breather!

This guy worked at a stall in a market in Tokyo. Luckily I caught him just as he was reflecting on the day.

The Philosopher's Walk

The Philosopher's Walk

The Philosopher's Walk is a pedestrian path that follows a cherry-tree-lined canal in Kyoto, between Ginkaku-ji and Nanzen-ji. The route is so-named because the influential 20th century Japanese philosopher and Kyoto University professor Nishida Kitaro is thought to have used it for daily meditation. It passes a number of temples and shrines such as Hōnen-in, Ōtoyo Shrine, and Eikan-dō Zenrin-ji. It takes about 30 minutes to complete the walk, although many people spend more time visiting the sights along the way.

Elegance

Elegance

Geisha are traditional, female Japanese entertainers whose skills include performing various Japanese arts such as classical music and dance for customers at tea houses. Their art is diminishing and it it said there are fewer than 500 'real' Geishas left in Japan. This is a shot of a Maiko, an apprentice Geisha. I found out her name is Mamemaru (Thanks to Kyouka below).

I have read that they are quite hard to spot, I walked the street in the Gion district for an hour or two before this elegant lady appeared. There is something so mysterious about their presence as silence falls as they pass on the streets.
