Most lookouts on the South Rim are promontories. The Abyss, along Hermit's Rest Road, just west of Mohave Point, is actually an indentation, but the views are still fantastic. From here you get a real feel for the depth of the Grand Canyon; in front of you is only air, with a sheer 3000' drop to the Tonto Platform, a wide sandstone terrace about two-thirds of the way down. This pic was taken about 20 minutes down the trail from a previous one I posted of Mohave Point. I talked my wife into taking a picture of me standing on a ledge near here off to the right - scary stuff!
cheers,
steve
