We were privileged to be in the midst of this large group of Sandhill Cranes tonight as they came in to roost on the shore of the lake where we were kayaking. We counted 31 of them near us, but could hear more on the far shores as well. Their prehistoric-sounding squawking is of my favorite sounds in the whole world! (Listen to it here if you want:www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Sandhill_Crane/id)
This photo was taken at a high ISO...at dusk...from a moving kayak....so please excuse the poor quality and heavy editing. I tried to make the best of it so I could share it with you all. Press "L" to view on black (thanks to BEP1956 for that reminder).
