Photographically speaking, I've had a very slow start to 2012. Perhaps because there's just so much going on, it's hard not to feel like I'm rushing through life, eager for new beginnings. So I thought this image might be an appropriate reminder to just slow down... though it's clear what others & even the birds feel about obeying the rules!

I took this in Forget, Saskatchewan at the edge of town.

"prairie islands" - my first photobook!

"prairie islands" - my first photobook!

"prairie islands" is the result of an idea I've had for a while now, to document my rural explorations in a printed portfolio format. I've never put a photo book together before now, and the experience was really quite rewarding. It gave me an opportunity to see my own work with a different eye and the end product really exceeded my expectations. I am thrilled with MyPublisher.com!

Stuartburn Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church

Stuartburn Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church

I discovered this little Ukrainian church in the RM of Stuartburn, Manitoba this week. This church is representative of many just like it throughout South Eastern Manitoba.

The mood & tone of the image rather reflects my overall impression of this part of the province. It feels bleak and foreboding, especially at this time of year. It amazes me that people manage to carve out a living for themselves here.

I chose to photograph the rear of the church, as it was the only angle that would give me a simple composition without power lines or other buildings. The lot next to this one is full of old cars and dilapidated buildings.

"See Through" House

"See Through" House

This was taken on December 24th as the setting sun fell behind this old abandoned house near Fisher Branch, Manitoba.

It was a bit of a scramble to get back to this location and find someone willing to grant us permission to photograph the house all before the sun set. We caught it just in time. :)

Partial Lunar Eclipse - St. Andrews Anglican Church

Partial Lunar Eclipse - St. Andrews Anglican Church

I was up at 5:00 AM with the intent on capturing today's lunar eclipse. I drove out to the Portage La Prairie area under a brilliant moon, and chose this spot to photograph the event. No sooner had I setup my camera when a bank of clouds totally obscured the moon as it neared a full eclipse. Unfortunately, this was the best I could do.
