H.P. Lovecraft's Headstone Erection 19-August-1977
The Placement of the Howard Phillips Lovecraft, and Sarah Susan Lovecraft Headstones: Two photos by Dr. Donald R. Burleson from 1977.
The funds for these headstones (approximately $1225, from ninety individuals) were collected by the foremost H.P. Lovecraft scholar of that time, Dr. Dirk W. Mosig (the man who started the fund-raising effort in the summer of 1976), and by Ben P. Indick (of the Esoteric Order of Dagon).
The headstones for H.P. Lovecraft and his mother were erected on Friday, August 19, 1977, by three stone workers, beginning at 1:00p.m..
They couldn't be erected on Lovecraft's 87th. birthday, Saturday, the 20th., because the three stone workers would not work on that day.
In attendance on the day of the erection of the two headstones, were nine individuals:
Mrs. Ethel Phillips Morrish (1888-1987), Lovecraft's second cousin; and one of the copyright holders (along with Edna Lewis) of Lovecraft's copyrighted works for 28 years. Her grandfather and H.P. Lovecraft's grandfather Whipple Phillips were brothers. She and her husband Edward H. Cole attended Lovecraft's actual burial on March 18, 1937, so her attendance at the headstone erection on August 19, 1977 was an historic event for her and everyone that attended with her.
Dr. Donald R. Burleson, the man responsible for these two pictures, author of, "Lovecraft: Disturbing the Universe," "H. P. Lovecraft: A Critical Study," "Wait for the Thunder: Stories for a Stormy Night;" and many more fiction and non-fiction works. Visit www.blackmesapress.com for more on Don.
