SELECTED WWII AUXILIARIES: WA minesweeper-trawler HMAS BONTHORPE - RAN Historical.

4051. We know little of the 273 grt auxiliary minesweeper HMAS BONTHORPE, and the late John Bastock produced a sketch rather than a photograph of her in his encyclopedic 1975 limited edition book 'Australia's Ships of War.'

Anyway, this photo has been released with the RAN Archives, perhaps before the ship's commissioning into the RAN on Feb. 5, 1940. She is unarmed, and is not painted in Navy colour, no hull letter.

Built in 1917 BONTHORPE was requisitioned on Nov. 27, 1939, commissioned into the RAN on Feb 5, 1940, and purchased outright on June 30, 1944.

She served with minesweeping Group 66 based in Fremantle, WA, and paid off on Feb. 17, 1945. Her pennant number was FY 85.

John Bastock's book has her returned to owners in 1946, but since we have the added detail of her RAN acquisition we'll rely on Ross Gillett's account that she was sold in 1948 [ Gillett : 'Australian and New Zealand Warships 1914-1945' ], p174.

Photo: RAN Historical, it appears in the RAN Heritage Collection, ID NO. 01710.
