Ca, 1970s: Skyhawk A4G readied for launch, HMAS MELBOURNE [II] - RAN.

2553. The Skyhawk is being hooked to HMAS MELBOURNE [II]'s steam catapult, an object of intense interest to the Chinese when they purchased the carrier for scrap in 1985 and accidentally kept her for military instruction and study for many years afterwards.

Photo: RAN Official, it was shown online as part of an exhibition marking the 60th Anniversary of HMAS ALBATROSS, the Naval Air Station at Nowra, NSW, in October 2008. The photographs were displayed at the Shoalhaven City Arts Gallery that year. The photo also appears in the Topmill Pty Ltd book 'Aircraft Carriers and Squadrons of the Royal Australian Navy' [Topmill, Sydney c2010] edited by Jonathon Nally, p60.
