Many of the older homes and buildings in the New Orleans, LA, locale that were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina contained asbestos material (i.e. asbestos roofing tiles, transite siding, insulation, floor tiles, and popcorn ceilings). The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) was mandated to follow strict environmental protocols in the demolition of these homes that were designated Regulated Asbestos Containing Material (RACM) demolitions. Prior to and during the demolition of the RACM house, water was constantly sprayed onto the building to prevent the asbestos containing material from becoming “friable” (airborne).
