This bridge is supposed to cross over a river, not lead to a lake, but the Mississippi River floodwaters have pushed into the Yazoo River and flooded these corn (left) and wheat (right) fields in Satartia, MS, on Monday, May 16. 2011. The community of 96 was evacuated and this clearing of approximately 4,000 acres was completely flooded. Wave action and decay has freed parts of corn stalks collecting along the new shoreline. The water saturated soil does not allow enough oxygen to the plant, by the time the water is expected to recede, the stalks will be dead. The wheat was harvested earlier than scheduled from wet fields and will have to be dried before being used or sold. USDA Photo by Lance Cheung.
