The Dr. Norman E. Borlaug statue is unveiled in the National Statuary Hall at the U. S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, Mar. 25, 2014. Seen in front of statue is Mr. Bill Borlaug (son of Dr. Borlaug). Also unveiling the statue is Minority Leader of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Speaker of the House of Representatives John Boehner, Iowa Governor Terry Branstad and Majority Leader of the U.S. Senate Harry Reid. Today commemorates 100 years since Dr. Borlaug’s birth. Through his scientific and humanitarian achievements, Nobel Laureate Dr. Norman E. Borlaug (1914-2009) has been credited with saving millions of people from starvation in developing countries. His collaborative work with scientists in Mexico on a high-yielding, disease resistant dwarf wheat sparked the Green Revolution of the 1960s. The National Statuary Hall Collection in the U.S. Capitol is composed of statues donated by individual states to honor persons notable in their history. USDA photo by Lance Cheung.
