Cuyahoga River Flats

Mouth of the Cuyahoga River, from the east bank of the "flats" in Cleveland, Ohio. The railroad bridges that cross the river are an icon here in Cleveland. Shot around sunset on Kodak T-Max100 and scanned to digital, the photo reveals some more detail when enlarged.

    What an interesting photograph!

I like all the details in B&W
The birds all over the water give an original aspect to the shot
I also like the contrast of light in the sky.
The only thing I don't like is the black diagonal upper right stripe which cut the natural frame

This photo looks awesome in BW but in color it wouldnt look so hot...thats why i kinda have a problem with BW photography. If it doesnt look good in color then why keep it to change to BW. but...to hell with it. Very nice

This is so very interesting. At first glance I was sure it was boring... but then the details really started popping out. I love it! Wonderful job!

Nice capture of the birds, it seems like a dull shot, but there is so much detail in there. Almost really great!

Thanks for the great comments Judgment Day Reviewers. As always I appreciate your time and effort. You folks are always great!

Ryan, alas, I still shoot film (the old codger that I am :-D). My camera was loaded with T-Max 100 during this nice sunset, so no chance of retrieving the color... But as a fellow color junkie, I agree with your astute observation.

    Great spotted! A fave.
That the river caught fire once, I believe spontaneously.

  19. laszlo-photo (70 months ago | reply)

Thanks for the visit and fave henning. You have a good memory...

In 1969, this river was so polluted with industrial waste and oil that the river literally caught fire and burned uncontrolled for several hours.

Shortly after this made the national news, our Mayor (Ralph J. Perk) was using a blowtorch at an "industrial ribbon cutting" ceremony to dedicate a new building and stray sparks caught his hair on fire.

The media had a field day!

I grew up in the Cleveland area and always thought that the mayor caught his hair on fire from sparks when he was helping to sandblast a statue.

I remember well spending many a night down in the flats before it became the hot spot it is today...there were only places on the East side of the river...and those were seedy at best.

It is always great to swap old tales with another Clevelander, Matt. You might be right about ol' Ralph J.! It was a long time ago, and I also think he might have actually caught his hair on fire more than once, poor guy.

And yeah, the flats got a little bit more upscale, but there are still several seedy places remaining... perhaps for old time's sake.

Very nice shot - hard for anyone to really forget the river caught fire since the news people bring it up so often. It is similar to one I took I thought it was mine for a moment, then realized it was b/w & all mine are color.
