L'any 1981 es va celebrar a Bogotá (Colombia) el Primer "Encuentro Feminista Latinoamericano y del Caribe", on es va acordar assenyalar el 25 de novembre com a Dia Internacional per la No Violència contre les Dones, en commemoració del brutal assassinat de les germanes Mirabal, activistes polítiques dominicanes, l'any 1960 per ordre del dictador Rafael Leónidas Trujillo.
L'any 1993 l'Assamblea General de les Nacions Unides va aprovar la Declaración sobre l'eliminació de la violència contra les dones, en la que es va definir la violència contra les dones com a:
tot acte de violència basat en el gènere que té com a resultat possible o real un dany físic, sexual o psicològic, incloent les amenaces, la coerció o la prohibició arbitrària de la llibertat, ja sigui que ocorri a la via pública o en la vida privada.
En aquesta Assamblea es va reconèixer que era necessaria "una clara declaració dels drets que s'han d'aplicar per assegurar l'eliminació de tota violència contra les dones en totes les seve formes i un compromís dels Estats i de la comunitat internacional en general per a eliminar la violència contra les dones".
El 17 de desembre de 1999, l'Assamblea General de les Nacions Unides va designar oficialment el 25 de novembre como el Dia Internacional de l'Eliminació de la Violència contra les Dones. L'ONU va invitar a governs, organitzacions internacionals i organitzacions no governamentals a organitzar activitats dirigides a sensibilitzar al públic respecte del problema en aquest dia com una celebració internacional.

Women's activists have marked November 25 as a day against violence since 1981. On December 17, 1999, the United Nations General Assembly designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (Resolution 54/134). The UN invited governments, international organizations and NGOs to organize activities designated to raise public awareness of the problem on this day as an international observance. Women around the world are subject to rape, domestic violence and other forms of violence, and the scale and true nature of the issue is often hidden.
This date came from the brutal assassination in 1960, of the three Mirabal sisters, political activists in the Dominican Republic, on orders of Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo (1930-1961).
