Cattle Egret in breeding plumage

A first for me.

This small stocky heron is approx 18-22 inches tall. It is often seen in fields following grazing cattle and horses catching insects they stir up from the ground.

Below is a photo I took of one a month before in non-breeding plumage. Quite the transformation.
Both can viewed large if you like.

Open up mom, we're hungry!

I didn't post what happened next. A gooey recycled fish came sliding out of mom's beak and the chicks went crazy eating it up...yum! These chicks are approx one week old.
