I was stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota 1981 thru 1984. It was a SAC base at the height of the Cold War (Reagan was President) We had 2 wings of B-52 Bombers and also the KC-135 Tankers.Nuke Alert Pad...the whole works! I was in the Avionic Maintenance Squadron fixing compass systems and the auto-pilot. We also had a side job of being a part of the "Strategic Projection Force" (now called "Delta Force") when they had long range bombers as a part of the plan.

I once particitpated in a History Channel episode called "Events That Shook The World" and this episode was about the Enloa Gay. I played the roll of Dutch Van Kirk, the planes navigator. I sat in that position on a B-29 at March Air Force base, they have a '29 in their museum and it hasn't seen any changes or removal of items since it landed in the 80s. Let me tell you, they are cramped in there! They are bigger than the B-17, yet the equipment and wiring harnesses are very much like that in the image. They would be a little more tight up against the fuselage, yet with flack and battle damage, it wouldn't be out of the question to have them shake loose and hang a little more than normal.
This is a fine illustration... A type of illustration one doesn't see often... The navigators of these machines are never depicted as often as the pilot and such.
Wonderful colors and composition.
