Stand Tall
One more picture-I-didn't-intend-to-take from tonight. I like the color in this one. Post-processed pretty heavily.

Signal+Gate
Another shot I didn't mean to take from this evening. Post-processed this one (just w/ iPhoto this time) to lighten it up a good bit and try to turn the noise into a film grain-type effect.

Hamill Crossing
I did not intend to shoot photos tonight. However, I try to always be a good photographer and carry my camera, tripod and other photo geek accessories with me so that I'm ready if I find myself in a situation that calls out for photo takin'.
After spending about three hours at the local Starbucks after leaving the office, feverishly working on rewriting a 700-line bit of JavaScript, I packed up to head home. When I got out to my car, I noticed the clouds in the sky and got to thinking that the sunset was probably going to be nice and colorful. I decided to head over to the railroad cross about a half mile away on Hamill Road, thinking that maybe I'd get lucky and catch a train.
As I crossed over the tracks, I noted that a train was already heading off into the distance ... probably had just passed the crossing no more then 2-3 minutes before. "Oh well," I thought, "I'll just catch the sunset ... it sure looks nice."
Some days being a railfan photographer means that you wait for a few hours and never catch any rail traffic. Today was not that sort of day.
I had barely set up my tripod before I heard the blast of a locomotive horn in the distance. Along came a couple of BNSF units pulling some shiny new hopper cars. Took some photos. Wasn't terribly happy. Started to pack up, and I heard yet another horn blast in the distance, signaling the approach of the train pictured above.
After capturing this and a few other photos, I packed up and proceeded to wait about 10 minutes for the train to pass so I could get back on the correct side of the tracks. As I crossed the tracks, the crossing signals lit up again ... yes, there was yet another train coming, this time from the other direction.
I think this makes up for all the house I've sat at the TennBridge or other locations and waited and waited for hours for a train to pass ... and gone home empty-handed ...
Unfortunately, this one is a bit on the noisy side. Sooner or later I will upgrade to a DSLR that takes cleaner night shots ...

C.B. Robinson Bridge
... that's the bridge in the distance on the left; it carries DuPont Parkway across the Tennessee River.
The timing on this one was perfect, as far as the light goes. I wish the dock I was standing on hadn't been rocking though, so the photo would be crisper.

Lupton City Tracks
Desaturated a good bit, since the light made the tracks looking a little too funky for my tastes.
