Very neat. But why is it necessary? It looks like the ground underneath is hike-able.

This probably gets very wet and mushy in the spring, eh? Or is it just to protect the ground from everyone's footsteps? I went on many trails like that through Algonquin and I agree, the chicken wire is a great idea.

: But of course! It's been so long since I've been hiking that I've forgotten how muddy a trail can get after it rains.

Also, in the spring trails tend to be very muddy. Most of the hike was flat and the area boggy. The chicken wire works well to keep the wood from becoming slippery.

I love the way it winds its way into the woods. Makes me wish I were there, hiking.

I made 546 feet of board walk like this in Alaska in 2004, and that chicken wire is a great idea. I'm sure it really helps when it's wet. It was very dry when we were there, so it didn't occur (or matter) to us if the boards were slippery or not (cuz they weren't).
