George Romney
George Romney was the CEO of the American Motors Corporation and would serve as the 43rd Governor of the state of Michigan and the 3rd United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President Richard Nixon.
In 1939, living in Detroit, Romney joined the American Automobile Manufacturers Association. After 15 years of being the Spokesperson for the Association, Romney met George Mason who was president of Nash-Kelvinator Automotives. Mason took Romney under his wing and was named the CEO of American Motor Corporations within 5 years. Nash-Kelvinator were going under and would become the American Corporation and Romney would help it compete against the 3 big car companies in Detroit.
In 1961, he was asked to help rewrite the Michigan Constitution and would lead him into politics. He would win Governor of Michigan in 1962 and served for the little people. He tried to help Detroit clean its image and helped Michigans Government grow. He would install the first state tax for Michigan but all money went into helping smaller cities grow. He was also a strong believer in the Civil Rights Movement. He would be elected 2 more times as Governor and become a leading force in the Republican Party.
As a leading member of the Republican party, Romney announced in 1966 that he would be running for the 1968 Presidential election. However, in 1967, his popularity was dropping and was losing ground to Republican Richard Nixon so Romney dropped out the race. Nixon won the Republican vote and would win the Presidency. Nixon would appoint Romney to his White House Cabinet as the 3rd Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. There, Romney set out to try to segregate all suburban neighborhoods and create housing for the poor. But was mostly shut down by Richard Nixon because they saw different views. Romney would resign after Nixons first term inj office and did not return for Nixons controversial 2nd term.
Romney would retire from politics after his stint in the White House. He served as CEO of a car corporation, governor of Michigan, and on Nixon's White House Cabinet. He was able to do all this on just a High School education. Romney dropped out of college and never graduated. He is buried at Fairview Cemetery in Brighton, Mi.
