Look down into the sky

Guest Lake shoreline in early morning calm.

Guest Lake is just below Bench Valley in the John Muir Wilderness, North Fork Kings drainage. It's a beautiful, remote spot good for camping, fishing, and meditating.

Navajo Mountain

Navajo Mountain

Navajo Mountain (10,346') is a volcanic intrusion, or laccolith, that did not break through the sedimentary rocks. The sandstone was subsequently eroded away over a vast region of northern Arizona and southern Utah, leaving the volcano exposed. A forest fire on the northeast flank of the mountain mimics a new eruption. The meanders of Lake Powell (San Juan Arm) run through the bottom of the photo. The view here is about 12 miles wide and 18 miles deep.

Taken from a commercial flight July 1999, looking south. Check notes in photo for features.

Morning at Badwater

Morning at Badwater

The time I like to see Death Valley is after a big rain. The heavy rains of Feb 2010 filled the floor of the lowest playa in North America, creating a temporary ocean resembling the Alaska inside passage out of a normally parched, dry desert. Telescope Peak, nearly 2 vertical miles above Badwater, is hidden in the cloud. Click here to see the other side of the Panamint Range the previous day as the storm was clearing.

Storm Over Hell-for-Sure Pass #1

Storm Over Hell-for-Sure Pass #1

Here's another case where I need help from my Flickr friends. Which version do you think is better?

This is Hell-for-Sure pass from Disappointment Lake, Red Mountain Basin, John Muir Wilderness.
