Swanson Drug Store, Ambush of Cop Killer Augustine "Gus" Amadeo
Gus Amadeo was wanted in the death of Chicago Police Detective Charles Annerino in 1954. Legendary police Lieutentant Frank Pape tracked Amadeo and pressured his girlfriend Dolores to help set up a trap for the cop killer. Dolores convinced Gus to meet her in a parked car in front of the Swanson Drug Store (location pictured here.) On his way to meet her, Gus was ambushed and killed by Pape and his men who were concealed near the intersection of Clark & Berwyn in ordinary vehicles and plain clothes.
