Gable End

Gable End

These are the windows at the gable end of McParlands on the corner of Parnell Street and Church Lane, Ennis. In 2008 the Jacobean Chimney stack above the gable was discovered to be 600mm off the perpendicular necessitating structural repair work. These were taken down and carefully reconstruced during the winter 2011/12, revealing some of the secrets of the building. It was known to be an early 17th century house remodelled in the 18th century, but it is now thought to be the oldest timber-framed house in Ireland, dating to about 1550. It is hoped that dendrochronological analysis of the oldest timbers will give a precise to date to for the felling of the trees indicating the probable age of the building. This newly constructed gable using the original masonry was unveiled in the last couple of weeks. These two windows are Georgian in style.

Barrett's Lane, Ennis

Barrett's Lane, Ennis

The sign at Barrett's Lane, Ennis County Clare and the in the background the distinctive triple-diamond Jacobean chimney stacks over McParlands in Parnell Street that date to between 1580 to 1620, an icon of Ennis' late medieval heritage. That awful telephone line dates to the late 20th century.

'Market Day'

'Market Day'

The latest addition to the Ennis Sculpture Trail appeared last week in the Market Square. 'Market Day' by Barry Wrafter depicts two farmers striking a deal over the sale of a diary cow. This is a tricky shot to get due to the sheer numbers of people and large vehicles getting in the way!
